County

A county is generally a sub-unit of regional self-government within a sovereign jurisdiction. Originally, in continental Europe, a county was the land under the jurisdiction of a count. Counts are called earls in post-Celtic Britain and Ireland—the term is from Old Norse jarl and was introduced by the Vikings—but there is no correlation between counties and earldoms. Rather, county, from French comté, was simply used by the Normans after 1066 to replace the native English term scir —Modern English shire, as the Anglo-Saxon system of Shires was unique and thus hard for the Norman invaders to comprehend so they resorted to calling them Counties. A shire was an administrative division of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom (Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia, etc.), usually named after its administrative centre: for example, Gloucester, in Gloucestershire; Worcester, in Worcestershire; etc. or originate from these forms of names (e.g. Wiltshire derived from 'Wiltonshire' with Wilton as it's old county town). Thus, whereas the word comté denoted a sovereign jurisdiction in the original French, the English county denotes a subdivision of a sovereign jurisdiction.

The first ever on-line grading system for all Squash Players ...

Voici, à mon avis, un excellent moyen pour affilier un grand nombre de joueurs et, peut-être, relancer un peu l'intérêt de ce sport.


England Squash a confié à la société SportFocus la gestion de la base de données de ses membres et le classement des joueurs. ESgrading permet à tout joueur de squash, pour autant qu'il s'affilie auprès de ES (England Squash), de communiquer via SMS les résultats de ses matchs et d'obtenir un ranking quasi instantané.

England Squash

SportFocus have been working with England Squash since 2003 and have implemented for them their Membership Database and the National Grading System. The latest project has been the website and a lot of the interaction and functionality is driven from the Membership database, such as the Find a Coach, Club, Area Information etc. Within each of these areas, Coaches and Club/County administrators are able to update their own details.

Les classements

Deux grandes catégories chez les adultes (plus de 15 ans) : la première (de A à C) regroupe les joueurs défendant les couleurs d'un club en compétition, la deuxième (de D à F) les autres. Les juniors (moins de 16 ans) ne peuvent avoir un classement A ou B.



Calcul des points

A chaque résultat de match introduit dans la base de données, en respectant strictement la chronologie (date et heure), les points des deux joueurs impliqués (et donc leurs classements) sont adaptés suivant la position du joueur gagnant.

Communication des résultats

Trois options sont possibles et la troisième permet de communiquer, via SMS, le résultat de matchs amicaux (friendly games) ce qui permettra à chacun de se positionner dans une échelle de valeurs indépendamment des matchs de championnats ou de tournois dont les contraintes horaires rebutent souvent les joueurs débutants.

FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

When does a junior graded player become a senior graded player?
The National Grading System allows juniors to play at two levels:

1. Players up to and including the age of 15 years
   Players play within grades C1 – F2 using the definitions to select their appropriate level. Junior players cannot progress beyond C1 grade until they reach their 16th birthday when at which point they will automatically switch to the appropriate adult grade. Regardless of their potential successes, a junior player aged 15 or under cannot achieve a points total beyond 2200.
2. Players 16 years and above
   Players play within all grades, A1 – F2 using the definitions to select their appropriate level. There is no restriction on a players points total.

Do I have to be a member of England Squash?
Yes. The only way you can register your grade and subsequently access the system and record your results is by entering your England Squash Membership number.

What results are entered into esgrading.com?
There are several ‘results’ that are eligible to be entered onto the system;

• National Graded Events – results from England Squash ‘registered’ graded adult and junior events will be entered into the graded system by the tournament organiser
• County League - results will be entered into the graded system by the County League organiser
• Club Championship, Club Box League and Friendly matches – results are entered by the players themselves via mobile telephone technology. Both players must enter the result to validate the entry.

Results will count from the date a player registers their grade and they play their first match or tournament. Previous results cannot be carried forward. The following questions/answers explain the process that will take place should a player register and then become inactive.

Points will be ‘weighted’ dependant on the type of match played. For example, National Graded Events will score the highest, while friendly matches will carry the least weighting.

What happens if you don’t play enough Graded Events?
Six months of no activity will result in a player moving down a grade but to the equivalent number i.e. C1 to D1. (id est (Latin) that is to say )

Twelve months of no activity will result in a player being hidden on the grading system until they reactivate themselves.

Who sends in the results?
Results from matches which require entry by a Tournament Organiser must must be entered onto the system within 7 days of the event/match taking place.

Results from matches using SMS require both players to enter their score within 2 hours of each other.

Do you need to record you own results?
For results to count, tournament organisers are required to submit all results within 7 days of the event taking place. You are advised to keep a record of your results should an omission or error occur.

What happens if a result is entered incorrectly?
Where it is suspected that a result or results of a player may have been entered incorrectly, the England Squash Grading Administrator may obtain a player history for the purposes of checking a players results.

If a result from a County League match or National Graded Tournament is entered incorrectly, the player must confirm with the Tournament Organiser who can amend or delete any results that have been inputted.

Please note that if a further match has been played by either of these players, then the result cannot be amended as this will have a knock on effect on other results.

If the match is a friendly, club box league or Club Championship match, the results will be entered using SMS. Any descrepancy in the score will be sent back immediately via a text inviting both players to re submit the result.

Checking your progress
A list of players and their grading will be constantly available on esgrading.com. It should be noted that no graded listings will be sent by post, fax or electronic mail.
