New Pro Circuit in the Netherlands
forexx pro tour.jpg
By Tommy Berden
Next Events

Next Events have launched a new pro circuit as a lead-up to the Forexx Women's World Open Squash 2009, which will take place next year in Amsterdam from 20-27 September.

The Forexx Pro Tour Squash 2008-2009 will consist of 10 professional tournaments, all counting towards the World Rankings. The theme of the new circuit will be 'The Road to the Forexx Women's World Open'.
The Forexx Pro Tour gives the Dutch men the chance to earn wildcards for next year's Dutch Open, while the women will be competing to earn main draw and qualifying places for the official individual World Championships for women in 2009.

The Forexx Pro Tour Ranking will determine the best Dutch players in the Forexx Pro Tour Squash 2008-2009. The points earned for this (internal) ranking will be based upon the World Ranking points that the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and Women's International Squash Players Association (WISPA) use. Players have to compete in at least half of the tournaments in the Forexx Pro Tour to be eligible for the available wildcards and hold Dutch nationality.

Next-Events_logo.JPG"We have launched the Forexx Pro Tour Squash 2008-2009 to provide the national top players with an opportunity to earn valuable points to climb up the World Rankings with the added bonus of competing for wildcards for the Worlds (women) or the Dutch Open (men)." said promoter Tommy Berden. "On top of that it ensures a long lead-up to the Forexx Women's World Open Squash 2009, which gives us multiple chances to promote this major event."

The first tournament of the new pro circuit will be the Forexx Dutch Open Squash 2008, which begins on September 2nd in the renowned Frans Otten Stadion in Amsterdam. This WISPA Gold championship and PSA 3 star event will be followed a few weeks later by the Pepsi Enschede Open Squash 2008 for the women (26-28 September) and the Turnstone Tilburg Trophy 2008 for the men (3-5 October).

Alan Thatcher @ 360

About the Author: Alan Thatcher is a journalist, event promoter and TV commentator. Alan joins Squash360.com as Contributing Editor. Come back each Monday as Alan offers his unique insight into the sport. In the weeks and months ahead Alan will interview key figures in the game and share plenty of stories from down the years.

A DEFINING MOMENT FOR SQUASH AS WE JUMP THROUGH HOOPS TO GET INTO THE OLYMPICS

Well, the Olympic Games are in full swing in Beijing and once again squash is not invited to the party.

It will be the same in 2012, when the Olympics return to London. How fitting it would have been for squash to make its debut in the city where the sport was invented, at Harrow School, in Victorian days.

However, the battle is now on for squash to be accepted as an Olympic sport in 2016 as the World Squash Federation continues its lobbying procedures. The host city of the 2016 Games will be announced in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009.

The bidding cities for 2016 are Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Of the four, Chicago and Madrid would appear to offer the best options for squash. Chicago has staged several major PSA events in recent years and, after a gap year because of sponsorship difficulties, a new event, the Sweet Home Chicago Open, makes its first appearance in September, with the glass court staged in a spectacular city centre location.

The selection of stunning venues is a major plus factor for squash, and Madrid offered a royal place to showcase the Women's World Open last year. Significantly, the event was hosted by the Madrid 2016 Olympic Games bid team to demonstrate their ability to stage major international events.

One fascinating element of the tournament was the fact that Spanish TV shot the event in high definition. The WSF kindly asked me to commentate on the highlights programme and the quality of some of the filming was mind-blowing.

If you haven't seen it, try to get a copy from the WSF offices. The super slow-motion replay captured one of the Grinham sisters making a huge lunge for the ball and, to me, commentating in a studio in London and watching the drama unfold, on a huge screen in front of me, it seemed like a defining moment for the televising of our sport.

Our leading athletes need to be lightning fast, have incredible reflexes and be able to sustain a phenomenal physical workrate to succeed at the highest level. However, despite this impressive array of elements, which makes our sport so compelling and exciting to watch in the flesh, television has failed to capture the very essence of the sport.

In the past, an oft-repeated criticism of televised squash is that it makes the game look too easy and fails to show how hard the players are working.

However, by slowing down the movement, and watching an incident unfold, frame by tantalising frame, you could appreciate the incredible stretching, twisting and turning required to retrieve the ball. It was truly, truly amazing.

There is a staggering irony here. While squash remains outside the Olympic fraternity, the costs of producing this ground-breaking TV coverage were absorbed by a proud Spanish city keen to outdo the achievements of the 1992 Games held in Barcelona.

The footballing rivalries of the mighty Real Madrid and Barcelona are a microcosm of the bitter political, cultural and regional differences that dominate Spanish history. But let's not dwell on that here.

At current rates, the production costs of televising squash in HD are at least £25,000 (50,000 USD) a day. I know because that's the figure I was quoted by a major sports marketing company's TV division for a joint partnership in creating a new event especially for television.

Finding that kind of money is a tough challenge for squash.

The Madrid 2016 team clearly enjoy the solid support of their national broadcasters. How wonderful it would be for squash to experience that level of backing, with national TV stations willingly underwriting such superb coverage.

Currently, Malaysia's broadcasters are the only ones to translate their nation's love affair with Nicol David into regular TV coverage.

We can only hope that if squash succeeds in gaining a place in the Olympics then increased TV exposure will follow.

By being an Olympic sport, our national federations will receive increased government funding to assist the process and help to raise the profile of the sport.

Let's wish the WSF every success in their endeavours. Our leading squash players would view an Olympic medal as the ultimate highlight of their careers.

I can't see that view being shared by multi-millionaire golfers, who are also bidding for a place in the Olympics, or by the cosseted tennis players who are already there.

One thing's for sure: an Olympic squash event would not be susceptible to the Beijing smog.

Let's hope those IOC delegates voting in Copenhagen next year have a clear view of squash's qualities. I hope they enjoyed the video from Spain.

How the Rankings work @ SquashPlayer

PSA Ranking Policy
General
Players competing in PSA tournaments earn ranking points according to how far they get in the draw. The points available depend on the prize money and the draw size. The monthly rankings (issued on the 1st of the month) are used in selecting entries to tournaments and in determining the seeds. The total number of points a player earns in a year (52 weeks) is divided by the number of tournaments played ( a minimum of eight are required) to give a ranking average. Where a player has played more than 8 tournaments the best scores may be selected (ie. the lowest are not included) according to the Averaging Formula below. For example, a player who has competed in 13 events will have selected his best 10 scores, which will be accumulated and divided by 10.

Averaging Formula
Events Played Best Results/Divisor Events played Best Results/Divisor
9 8 16 12
10 8 17 12
11 9 18 13
12 9 19 14
13 10 20 15
14 10 24 18
15 11 25 19

Zero Scores
A zero score is automatically given for the following :
LATE WITHDRAWAL; NO-SHOW; DISCIPLINARY MATTERS
For recording purposes on the ranking computer a disciplinary Zero score is recorded as a 99. This 99 will stay on player's records as an event played and count towards the ranking average for the following 12 months. If a player fails to play a tournament through sickness or injury he must supply a medical certificate. Once that medical certificate is received by the PSA office a 99 may be recorded as a 98. A 98 is included as one of the player's lowest scores, for the calculation of ranking, until a player has played 9 events.

Ranking Points
The PSA ranking system is based on dollars earned.

a) Satellite/International/Super Series
i) Main Draw:
To calculate the number of ranking points a player receives from a tournament, divide his player compensation (prize money plus hotel bonus) by 10. The breakdown is given below.

MARTIN BRONSTEIN REPORTING FROM MADRID SPAIN
SECOND ROUND OCTOBER 24

KITCHEN DUMPS NICOL IN HUGE UPSET

shelley
Shelley Kitchen attacked with power and focus (Fritz Borchert photo:© 2007)

In the biggest upset for many months, Shelley Kitchen of New Zealand, presently ranked 11 in the world, knocked out the reigning world champion Nicol David in a five match thriller that had onlookers on tenterhooks until the very last point of the 69 minute battle. Her departure was a huge shock; it is the first time in 36 events that she has failed to reach the quarter-finals of a tournament.

Kitchen put in a storming performance, one that will give her the confidence to get back into the top ten, and one that will be remembered for a long time. She started the match in overdrive and was powering the ball as though time was running out. David is a notorious slow starter and Kitchen’s onslought caught her napping. There was nothing she could do about this blitzkreig and Kitchen zipped the world champion 9-0 inside eleven minutes.

In the second game Kitchen continued where she left off and Nicol showed sure signs of nerves as she snatched at shots and tried volleying at the wrong time. Her length was wanting badly and even on those rare occasions when she had Kitchen out of position, her drives died before the short line and Kitchen was back in the rally. Kitchen’s was the perfect strategy and one which would have given an on-form David problems, but she was not on form and is still troubled by nerves before a match. This is a player with huge national pressure, being one of the highest profile sports personalities in Malaysia. Sometimes the pressure simply too much.

WISPA World Tour will break all records in 2007

L'info de Squash info est tellement réjouissante que l'on ne peut qu'en faire l'écho :

Women's Squash Tour Reaches New All-Time High

20 Jul 07

With almost half the year still to go, the Women's International Squash Players' Association reports that the WISPA World Tour will break all records in 2007.

Tour prize money will break through the $1.5 million mark, revealing a 50% rise on last year. With the number of events up by a third on last year, women's international squash is very much on the rise.

Further investigation shows that the number of WISPA Gold & Platinum events (boasting prize funds in excess of $43,000) will rise from six in 2006 to 12 this year - while the number of Tour events has increased overall from 42 last year to 70 this year. WISPA tournaments in 2007 will be staged in 54 cities in 23 countries, across all five continents.

"Not only is the Tour value going up, but the variety of events available to our members is increasing significantly too," commented WISPA President Natalie Grainger. "This is great news all round."

WISPA Chief Executive Andrew Shelley explained: "So many national federations, promoters and squash clubs are seeing what a great promotional vehicle WISPA Tour events can be. They are doing a great job for the sport locally, as well as the players and squash enthusiasts.

"We should also pay tribute to our players: They are not only great sportswomen, but superb ambassadors too. It is our members who are WISPA's real sales team," added Shelley.
